Beautiful antique Romanian Bessarabian Kilim rug, country of origin: Romania, date circa late 19th century. Size: 12 ft 9 in x 14 ft 3 in (3.89 m x 4.34 m)
Inspired by the motifs and coloration of Classic French Aubusson tapestry, sprays of roses in a naturalistic style repeat in staggered, diagonal rows across the rich ivory field of this elegant Bessarabian Kilim. Pairs of larger roses forming linear garlands comprise the border. The contrast between the monumentality of the border and the minuscule delicacy of the field is quite distinctive, adding an element of surprise or excitement within the larger mood of graceful poise.
Antique Bessarabian rugs in pile and tapestry technique occupy a unique place among European carpets. Produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries under late ottoman Turkish rule in an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Rumania, they stand right on the cusp of European and oriental carpet weaving. Many of the designs are floral patterns made in a naturalistic western style utilizing brown or black ground, not unlike certain Karabaghs from the Caucasus. But others, particularly flat-weaves, reflect the tradition of Turkish Kilim’s from nearby Anatolia, although in a distinctive Bessarabian palette. In either case they are supremely decorative pieces.
