'Baako' Contemporary Design Rug by Simone Haug for Alberto Levi Gallery
About the Item
In 'Baako', the contemporary Swiss artist Simone Haug continues her exploration of our collective unconscious which she has began with 'Niches'.
The term 'baako' originates from African languages and signifies the first born child. Like scattered elements on a playground, people move around the child, the yellow element placed at the exact center of the composition. Yellow is a colour that Simone Haug normally uses in her artworks with discretion as it has an intimate connotation. The design is an encounter between Scandinavian calm and African rhythm. The textural high/low technique adopted here for the pile further reinforces this evolutionary concept. It also offers a bridge between the domain of Art and Design, this being a border territory where Simone Haug often finds herself operating.
'Baako' is hand woven with Persian knots employing high quality, hand-spun New Zealand wool with superior fibre length, which makes the pile especially soft and durable at the same time. It is woven with a high/low textural structure that is reminiscent of Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian rugs. The configuration of this particular quality is such as to ensure that we achieve the desired texture, which differs from the regular qualities being produced in the market. In order to perfect this texture, the mill has developed a particular washing technique consisting of multiple runs. 'Baako' is offered in a limited edition and in a specific format, although we are able to produce this quality also in custom sizes.
