About the Item

Contemporary Sardinian 'Cagnolini' Carpet Cagnolini (IF-206) Sardinia, Italy. Hand-woven Rug 80 % Gray Linen & 20% Cotton In the central mountains of the island, where traditions become stronger, is located Samugheo, Sardinian's weaving capital. The geographical isolation has preserved their handmade heritage. In fact, in 2002 Museo Unico Regionale Artigianato Tessile Sardo (Unique Regional Museum Sardinian Textiles Craft) was built there to commemorate and protect their textile art. Traditional Sardinian weavings are patterned with pibiones, small raised bumps of thread. This unique stitched bas-relief is formed by infinite grains produced by twisting the yarn around a needle that is organized horizontally to the loom. Then, the needle is pulled away creating this beautiful texture. Each pibione must be counted and wound by hand, one pibione at a time, one row at a time, matched against patterns drawn by hand on paper. The traditional motifs commonly represent grapes or agricultural patterns, responding to one of the most important activities of the region. Since this art is completely done by hand is time-intensive, but also requires patience, physical strength, mathematical skills, and concentration. Thus, each piece is a unique artwork.
