-- About the artwork on which this rug is based: Composition (1944)
“An empty canvas is a living wonder… far lovelier than certain pictures.” Wassily Kandinsky
Kandinsky painted this Composition in 1944 as one of the last works he made before he died. It clearly shows his development of the biomorphic abstraction style that his work evolved into. The original artwork is currently at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris.
-- About Wassily Kandinsky:
Wassily Kandinsky is recognized as a pioneer of abstract art.
He was one of the first artists to use purely abstract compositions, abandoning recognizable forms in favor of shapes and colors that were intended to convey emotion and spirituality.
Kandinsky’s innovative approach to art continues to be celebrated today for its profound impact on the field of modern art.
His work has inspired countless artists, and his influence can be seen in abstract painting, graphic design, and even architecture.
“For Kandinsky, art was not just about creating beautiful objects, but about expressing spiritual truths and inner emotion through color and form.” – Vivien Greene, Senior Curator of 19th- and Early- 20th-Century Art at Guggenheim Museum.
Kandinsky’s art can be found in various museums and galleries around the world, including the Lenbachhaus Gallery in Munich and the Guggenheim Museum of New York. Additionally, it can also be found in private collections.
Now, it can be found in your home too, translated into a refined handmade rug from your favorite Kandinsky painting.

Kandinsky 2 Hand Knotted Modern Painting Rectangle Rug Large Size
By Sonya Winner
Located in London, GB
The Kandinsky Collection is a series of 3 colourful art rugs which feature painterly circular motifs woven in hand-dyed 100% New Zealand wool yarn which pay homage to Wassily Kandinsky’s vibrant palette and style.
Sonya’s love for art has always been a great inspiration during her design process. Sonya aims to capture not only the essence of Kandinsky’s artistic legacy but also to infuse the rug with a contemporary design that allows you to transform conventional floor space into functional art underfoot.
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist who played a crucial role in the development of abstract art during the early 20th century. He believed that art should express the artist’s inner emotions and spiritual essence rather copying the external world around them. This is what lead him to create work where colours and shapes interact with each other, producing a sense of movement and energy. He used bold, contrasting colours and geometric forms to convey his intense emotions provoking a powerful response from the viewer.
The Kandinsky 2 is a hand knotted, captivating rug design inspired by the abstract painting of artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky, who as a child in Moscow was fascinated and exceptionally stimulated by colour. Every knot in this rug is created by hand with meticulous precision by artisanal weavers in our best quality hand-dyed 100% New Zealand wool yarn, reflecting the intricate brushstrokes and vibrant colours reminiscent of Kandinsky’s work Concentric squares and circles (1913). The Kandinsky rugs...
