About the Item

17th century Spanish Cuenca rug (Size Adjusted) - Refined Iberian Heritage in Vibrant Form Size: 7'1" × 11'3" (215 × 342 cm) This vibrant Vintage Spanish Cuenca rug is a quintessential example of mid-century Spanish craftsmanship, showcasing the signature bold geometry and refined palette for which the Cuenca weaving tradition is revered. Woven in the historic Cuenca region of Spain, the piece embodies a dynamic fusion of Moorish influence and Spanish Baroque artistry, rendered in a refreshingly modern format. At the heart of the design is a highly structured repeating lattice of diamond motifs, interspersed with stylized vegetal flourishes and guarded by mythical heraldic beasts—dragons or griffin-like figures—encircling the wide border. The field is a rich golden ochre, providing a radiant, sun-washed ground for the sharply defined patterns in indigo blue, sea green, ivory, and terracotta. The framing border, with its rhythmic serpentine vines and fantastical creatures, adds a sense of narrative movement while anchoring the overall composition. Executed in a low pile wool weave, this rug maintains the firm, durable character typical of Cuenca textiles—ideal for both elegant display and practical floor use. Perfectly scaled for an intimate room or foyer, this 11’ x 7’ rug offers both decorative sophistication and a touch of European exoticism, appealing to collectors, designers, and enthusiasts of timeless textile art. A remarkable antique rug, from Doris Leslie Blau Collection, features a timeless elegance. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.

Vintage Spanish Cuenca Rug with Renaissance Palmette Design

The court workshop called 'Real Fabrica de Tapices' has been active in Madrid since the 17th century, supplying handmade carpets woven with Turkish (symmetrical) knots to both the court as well as for export. Throughout the 20th century their carpets were either woven with French Savonnerie patterns or, as in this case, with designs taken from the Spanish Renaissance weaving tradition. These carpets are known in the trade with the term of 'Cuenca,' which is the city in southern Spain where they were originally woven in the 15th-17th centuries. Here the pattern, which has a raised pile with respect to the ivory background, is distinguished by an infinite repeat of curvilinear palmettes as seen on 15th-16th century Spanish Alcaraz carpets.
