Early 20th Century French Inspired Bessarabian Carpet with Brown Ground

About the Item

Typical of most Bessarabian rugs this rug was inspired by eighteenth century French carpets popular at the Russian Court and in aristocratic circles. Both metropolitan and provincial antique Bessarabian kilims are distinguished from Western European urban weavings by less formal designs that manage to achieve an elegant balance between that formality and village spontaneity, making these unique flatweaves among the most sought after of decorative antique rugs and carpets.

Utilizing both Ottoman and European aesthetics and modes, this Besserabian flat-weave was woven in the Northeast of the country by the Black Sea either very close to or in the area now that is Moldova.
