Greta Skogster-Lehtinen, Finnish Flat-Weave Carpet, Aaltonen Mattokutomo 1930s

About the Item

Greta designed church textiles, monumental tapestries for public buildings, carpets, curtains, furniture fabrics and clothing textiles. This carpet has been most likely weaved in the 1930s. The sketch for the carpet can be seen in the Greta Skogster-Lehtinen book, and the sketch is originally from Suomen Taide ja Käsityö Ystävät museom (page 215). Greta Skogster participated in the Milan triennials and world exhibitions in the 1920s and 1930s and her textiles were awarded in the Wolrd Exhibitions of Barcelona (1929) and Paris(1937) and in the Milan triennial of 1933. Also worth mentioning is that Great and William Lehtinen estabalished a foundation bearing their names in 1968 to support visual arts, design, architecture and music.
