Late 19th Century Antique French Savonnerie Carpet with Traditional Style
About the Item
73397 Antique French Savonnerie Rug, 17'00 x 21'00. Steeped in the regal elegance of Belle Époque France, this exquisite hand-knotted wool Late 19th Century Savonnerie rug evokes the grandeur of aristocratic salons and the gilded halls of the French court. Its sumptuous terracotta red field, delicately adorned with floating floral sprays, whispers of a bygone era when the artistry of French textile weavers rivaled that of the most coveted Oriental imports. Inspired by the Louis XV and Louis XVI decorative arts, this magnificent Savonnerie rug embodies the splendor of Rococo Revival design, a style that flourished in the lavish drawing rooms of 19th-century Parisian nobility. The soft, glowing hues of faded pinks, warm beiges, and golden ochres dance across the surface, forming a harmonious symphony of color and refinement.
A masterpiece of French craftsmanship, the ornate scrolling acanthus leaves and floral bouquets gracefully unfold across the luminous ivory border, recalling the splendor of Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors and the Salon de la Paix. This particular motif, originally conceived under the artistic direction of Charles Le Brun for Louis XIV’s commissions, became an enduring hallmark of Savonnerie carpets. Every meticulously knotted petal and vine tells a story of an era when such carpets were reserved for royal palaces, embassies, and aristocratic townhouses, an exclusive privilege of French sovereigns and their courtiers.
As the 19th century unfolded, France’s Second Empire and Belle Époque periods embraced a nostalgic return to classical grandeur, reviving the aesthetic opulence of the Ancien Régime. This Savonnerie rug, with its symphonic interplay of floral and architectural elements, reflects that spirit—an homage to the timeless artistry of the Renaissance and the exuberance of Rococo design. The central floral medallion, framed by an intricate vine-scroll cartouche, is reminiscent of the opulent ceilings of the Palais Garnier and the resplendent interiors of Hôtel de Soubise, where every gilded detail was designed to enchant the senses.
A testament to both artistry and heritage, this antique French Savonnerie rug is more than a textile; it is a portal to the elegance and refinement of 19th-century France. As it graced the floors of an opulent Parisian estate or an aristocratic château, it bore silent witness to whispered intrigues, grand soirées, and candlelit reveries. Today, it offers a rare opportunity to bring a touch of historic French luxury into contemporary interiors, a relic of an age when beauty was woven into every thread.
Rendered in variegated shades of terra cotta red, tan, rose, beige, golden ochre, pink, and light green with other accent colors.

Late 19th Century Antique French Aubusson Rug, Hotel Lobby Size Carpet
By Eugène-Pierre Gourdet, Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise
Located in Dallas, TX
74394 Late 19th Century Antique Aubusson Rug, 14'06 x 25'03. A French Aubusson rug refers to a type of flat-weave rug that originated in the town of Aubusson, located in the Creuse region of central France. These rugs have a long history dating back to the 15th century, and they are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, intricate designs, and fine materials.
Exuding an aura of true decadence, this Late 19th Century antique French Aubusson rug emerges as a mesmerizing testament to handwoven beauty. Its intricate details and luxurious texture captivate the senses, offering a glimpse into the opulent world of Aubusson craftsmanship.
At its heart lies an elaborate design reminiscent of a palatial facade. A central acanthus leaf oval ceiling medallion, outlined by complementary scrollwork, evokes romantic connotations, while an array of quincunx motifs, reminiscent of the ceiling designs by Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise and Eugene-Pierre Gourdet, adorn the field in an alluring pattern.
Trompe l'oeil filigree adorns a delicate light pink oval band encircling the inner composition, where a rose festoon intertwines with a floral swag, adding a touch of delicate elegance. Resplendent round cartouche pendants dangle from an undulating ribbon band entwined with floral swag borders, further enhancing the rug's grandeur.
This antique Aubusson rug is enclosed by an acanthus ribbon border, coupled with an outer scallop border, creating a refined frame for its formal composition. These design elements, customary for Aubusson arrangements, showcase the style's predominant French influence, featuring ornate armorial medallions within intricate borders of rinceaux and garnished foliage.
But it is not only the embellishments that captivate; the extraordinary use of color adds depth and allure to the rug's narrative. Each hue harmonizes with the next, creating a mesmerizing dance that speaks with a timeless voice of sensual decadence and stately elegance.
In its entirety, this Aubusson masterpiece weaves together the tender, emotive, and vibrant details of human history, embodying the grand charm of a textile that transcends time, leaving an indelible mark on those who behold its beauty.

During the early seventeenth century, a weaver named Pierre DuPont travelled to the Levant. Upon his return, he claimed to have discovered the technique of creating Turkish rugs. Oriental rugs were extremely expensive during Bourbon times, and a French manufactory that could create the same type of rug would lower the price significantly. Henri VI of France–the reigning monarch at the time–took advantage of DuPont’s skills and established a workshop for him at the Louvre. In 1627, King Louis XIII founded a manufactory for DuPont and his apprentice, Simon Lourdes, on the site of a defunct soap factory in the sixteenth arrondissement (also known as Quai de Chaillot). The name “Savonnerie” was born from the French word “Savon” meaning “soap.” DuPont and Lourdes worked together, weaving rugs under a royal patent for the king and other nobles until they had a falling out and split up. Lourdes remained at the Chaillot location while DuPont went to his workshops in the Louvre, though both continued to make Savonnerie rugs.
