About the Item
73699 Beauvais Reproduction Tapestry, 05'00 x 06'07. Exuding an aura of imperial grandeur, this Beauvais-style tapestry is an opulent handwoven masterpiece that speaks directly to those who value exclusivity, rarity, and heritage. Reproduced after the famed The Collation: The Story of the Emperor of China series (1697–1705), it evokes the same aura of magnificence that once graced the grand salons of Europe’s most elite circles. To own such a piece was, and remains, a statement of cultivated taste and refined intellect—a declaration of aristocratic status.
The central vignette, alive with color and movement, is a romanticized vision of Emperor K’ang Xi and his empress at a lavish collation. From the golden dishes and porcelain treasures to the playful dwarf dancing beside a lute-playing musician, every detail is meticulously woven to reflect a world of abundance, leisure, and sophistication. Such scenes were not simply decorative; they were symbols of cultivated cosmopolitanism—an aesthetic language that only the most discerning collectors understood.
The tapestry’s border alone is a testament to regal luxury: ornate cartouches framed with blooming garlands and ripe fruits, proudly crowned with Louis XIV’s royal Coat of Arms and the gleaming fleurs-de-lys of France. This deliberate display of heraldry elevated Beauvais tapestries beyond mere artistry—they were emblems of power, wealth, and access to the rarest luxuries of the age.
Pieces of this caliber are exceedingly scarce, each one carrying the weight of historical grandeur and the prestige of royal patronage. Acquiring it today is not merely a purchase; it is a connoisseur’s triumph, a symbolic inheritance of European aristocracy, and an heirloom destined to captivate generations with its elegance and cultural significance.
Reproduced as a European representation of the Emperor of China, K’ang Xi who reigned from 1661-1721.
This Beauvais French Style Tapestry is a replication after cartoons by Guy-Louis Vernansal, and Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, and Jean-Baptiste Belin de Fontenay, about 1697 - 1705.

Weft: silk, Z-2, 90 wefts/in², or
Wool, Z-2-S, plain tan edge and various small details

Subject:
This panel is the first of a series of four depicting classical allegories of The
Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire). Francois Boucher created the original
paintings around 1770 and the first edition of the set was woven between 1772
and 1776. “Air” was the first woven and was 3.0m x 1.85m, a taller and narrower
format than our example.
The figures are: male, Cephalus, dressed as a hunter; female, Aurora; and Cupid (Eros), all within a tall, airy pavilion supported by four thin colonettes and
topped by a garlanded baldachin. The figures rest on a garden seat and there are trees and flowers in the background. A dog chases some birds in the foreground.
In the other tapestries in the series, there are similar male/female pairings
(Vertumnus and Pomona for Earth, Neptune and Amymone for Water, and
Venus and Vulcan for fire).
Remarks:
1. The series was copied several times between 1894 and 1897 from the original cartoons...
