This 13x14 antique Art Deco rug is a rare and exceptional new addition to Rug & Kilim’s collection—a gorgeous early Dutch find of the movement of a versatile square size and particularly grand, large-scale medallion—made with hand-knotted wool and believed to originate from the Netherlands circa 1900-1920.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may appreciate this transitional rug among the works of a special workshop among early 20th-century reimaginings of the Art Nouveau design sensibility, as well as a uniquely pastoral, French Country piece found in this weaving tradition. The medallion's scalloped perimeter flows with organic grace, its undulating edges suggesting water ripples or cloud formations that dissolve rigid geometric boundaries. The vibrant colorway is one of the most delicious elements here, where a sage green tone is favored in the field. Further, an atypical central medallion surrounded by floral patterns and cartouches flourish in blue, gold, red, brown and cream tones. Keen eyes for detail may further admire a litany of Rococo-inspired motifs in the patterns at play.
