Oversized Vintage Circa-1950 Gray Wool French Leleu Rug

About the Item

This vintage, circa 1950, French Leleu rug features a plain pale-grey field with a central large blue-grey panel with horizontal rows of minor blue circles and burgundy-red floral motifs alternating with rows of ivory lozenges between pale yellow dot-motifs, in a broad soft moss-green cusped panel containing stronger moss-green panels with golden-yellow linked oak-leaves, the panels linked by burgundy-red X-motifs, outer plain pale-grey stripe. Leleu rugs are exquisite examples of French Art Deco and modernist design, originating from the esteemed Maison Leleu, established in 1910 by Jules Leleu. These rugs are distinguished by their clean lines, geometric patterns, and refined color palettes, often featuring hues like sienna, moss green, and charcoal. Initially crafted under the guidance of designer Ivan Da Silva Bruhns, the rug collection was later led by Paule Leleu, Jules' daughter, who infused the designs with a harmonious blend of elegance and modernity. Each rug is handwoven, bespoke, and produced in limited editions, ensuring uniqueness and exceptional craftsmanship. Today, under the artistic direction of Alexia Leleu, the great-granddaughter of Jules, Maison Leleu continues to honor its rich heritage by reinterpreting archival designs and introducing contemporary creations that uphold the brand's legacy of luxury and artistry.
