About the Item

Handwoven in a wool flatweave and originating from Romania, circa 1850-1860, this 9x9 square antique kilim featuring floral patterns is one of the most special pieces and a rare collectible to ever enter these collections. On the Design Designers and admirers of the craft alike will particularly appreciate its size—one of the best and most versatile one can find in antique rugs of its period that lends to so many spaces today. This grand work seems to exemplify those of its lineage while subtly innovating the style to a keen eye. Keen eyes for detail will admire the style of this piece which is distinctly Romanian, a country famed as the origin of some of the most celebrated Bessarabian kilim designs archetypal of the European kilim style. The design features light sage and pista green tones underscore field and border alike, which both enjoy floral patterns in sprays inspired by European Neoclassical designs. This rug is one of the most unexpected of this provenance, both for its colors and its outstanding size, further contributing to its aristocratic sensibility. Condition: This antique Bessarabian square rug further enjoys good condition for its age and lineage, with exceptionally minimal wear consistent with its age—both ready for the floor and equally suitable in its size and sensibility to wall-hanging projects as well, making it a great collectible. Backing could be added to further ensure its longevity.

Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border, 19th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border, Mid-19th Century Pile carpets and flat-weaves known in the market as 'Bessarabian' were woven mostly in the 19th century in what are now the countries of Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine—along the northwestern coastal areas of the Black Sea (in eastern Europe). This older Bessarabian flat-weave uses a red derived from imported cochineal and adds a pleasing complimentary contrasting light green border, a feature lost in later examples. Planted flower pots...
