Flourishing in technique and trend from the middle of the 17th century for nearly two hundred years, until the early 20th century, this hand-woven wool vintage French Aubusson rug is a classic example of French romanticism. Taking center stage is an open medallion decorated with a rose bouquet comprised of cabbage roses, peonies, floral sprigs, rose buds and delicate leaves. The center medallion is outlined with acanthus scrollwork while the beige field is covered in an all-over complementary opulent frondescence pattern. Each corner is adorned with a rose garland wreath, trompe l'oeil filigree, and acanthus vine scroll. Characterized by predominate French influence with its ornate florals, the intricate borders of rinceaux and winding arrangements of garnished foliage and stylized floral bouquets enclose this captivating work of art. The embellishments alone are sufficiently captivating, but the use of color is extraordinary. The colors join to create a truly compelling dance, and inaudibly speak with a timeless voice that is characterized by sensual decadence, as well as by stately action.
