About the Item

A Renaissance armchair from the end of the 17th century. South or south-west European, probably Spain. Solid walnut with leather-covered seat and backrest. Restored ready to use with a beautiful original patina surface. In the second half of the 17th century in particular, armchairs of this type were very popular in Italy, Spain and in France as far afield as Antwerp in wealthy bourgeois and clerical homes. Straight-lined, traditionally mortised and tenoned walnut frame in stud construction with armrests and frames. High, slightly raised backrest ending in stylised carved scrolled volutes. Decoratively crafted and symmetrically ornamentally flat carved cross frame at the front under the seat. The armrests end in scrolled volutes. The seat and backrest are covered with thick cowhide. Dimensions Height: 75.5 cm (armrest) or 129.5 cm (backrest) / 29.72 inch (armrest) or 50.98 inch (backrest). Width: 63.5 cm / 25 inch. Depth: 55 cm / 21.65 inch. Seat height: 45 cm / 17.71 inch. An authentic piece in good, stable condition with slight signs of age-related wear. Some wooden parts have been replaced over the years. The leather upholstery was replaced at a later date in keeping with the style. The frame has been re-glued and the surface carefully cleaned and then polished with wax. Additional photos available!
