About the Item
An Attractive George III Mahogany Cockpen Armchair, c.1770.
This lovely chair is of a type known as a "Cockpen". Our chair has a boldly shaped back and arms filled with panels of fretwork, the designs taken from books of the time by the likes of Sir William Chambers and Thomas Chippendale who between them designed large numbers of different fretwork styles for use on furniture and in architectural projects. The rails of the back and the front seat rail employ subtle mouldings but are otherwise plain, acting as a background against which the fretwork can shine. There are also fretwork brackets on the legs.
It is a particularly nice colour and is in very good condition throughout. The fretwork has been well executed and the piece has plenty of character and charm.
