About the Item

18th Century, Italian Neoclassical Walnut Wood Duchesse Brisée Armchair This particular armchair, called Duchesse Brisée, was crafted in Piemonte during the Neoclassical period, around the late 18th century. The name "bergère duchesse" refers to an armchair or lit de repos and became most popular in the furnishings of French noble palaces and European courts in the 18th century. It is an armchair likely named after Madame de Pompadour, the famous favorite of King Louis XV of France, and is characterized by its sloped backrest, deep seat, and rear-set armrests, designed specifically to accommodate the large skirts of 18th-century ladies, supported by the panniers, a type of cage petticoat worn under the lavish dresses of the time. There are several variations of this type, and the present one, called "brisée," consists of two separable sections: one for seating and the other designed both for sitting, creating a lounge, and for stretching the legs, joining the two parts to transform it into a dormeuse or chaise longue suitable for daytime rest. This duchesse, made of walnut wood, features a circular, enveloping backrest with a sinuous profile and sculpted details, including phytomorphic elements and armrests ending in scrolls. The larger seat has a higher backrest and six legs, while the second portion, with a similar design, has a lower backrest and four legs. All the legs originate from a square, floral-carved capital and have column-shaped, inverted cone-like, fluted stems. Very decorative and versatile in use, it can also be placed at the center of rooms such as salons, studies, and bedrooms. It can be presented with its components together, functioning as a sofa and chaise longue, or, when needed, transformed into two comfortable and cozy seating areas, even separated by small tables or tables basses. The upholstery covering the cushions and wooden structure is in good condition.
