About the Item

This is a classic English Chippendale-style armchair, characterized by its refined lines and traditional craftsmanship. The chair is constructed from dark-stained oak, with a rich, aged patina. Key features include: Backrest: The hallmark of this piece is its elegantly shaped back splat, which is wide at the center and curves inward at the top and bottom in the traditional “vase” or “pierced splat” form, a signature element of Chippendale design. The top rail is gently arched with scrolled ends, lending a graceful silhouette. Arms: The arms are straight with slight outward curves at the ends, supported by turned vertical supports. Seat: The chair has a drop-in seat that has been reupholstered in a striped fabric, blending black, white, and beige tones. This provides a subtle contemporary contrast to the historic frame. Legs and stretchers: The legs are square and sturdy, connected by simple box stretchers, a hallmark of more restrained and practical Chippendale interpretations—suggesting this may be a provincial or country-made version of the style. Overall, this chair is a fine representation of the Chippendale tradition, combining both elegance and sturdiness, and would make a handsome accent in a traditional or transitional interior setting. Comes from the home of our founder, Dixon Smith. Originally purchased on one of our England antique buying trips.
