1959 Pair of Mies van der Rohe Brno Dining Chairs from Four Seasons Restaurant

About the Item

This is an important pair of Brno Armchairs, Model 255, initially designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929. These rare examples were manufactured in the United States by Treitel Gratz in 1959 as a custom order for The Four Seasons Restaurant in NYC. The listed price includes the pair of two armchairs as shown. They were purchased from Wright Auction when the house was charged with selling the original furnishings from the famous Mies and Philip Johnson designed space. Their design features bent chromed steel arms and sports a cantilevered base. The flat bar construction was some of the first of its kind, as opposed to the tubular stylings of the Bauhaus. With its advent in 29'-30', the design would stake its origins in the tail end of the Bauhaus period, which ended in 33'. Each chair measures 22.5 inches deep, 22.75 inches wide, and 31.5 inches in height. The seat height is 17.5 inches. The upholstery shows some signs of use around the edges and corners, and there are some scuffs and scratches on the frames. Overall, this pair remains in good condition. Please see photos.
