About the Item

Produced in the former Czechoslovakia, this pair of armchairs from circa 1960 are re-upholstered with an updated natural white fabric, chosen to compliment the elegant polish of the hardwood frame. Comfortable angles and clean lines are designed to comfort and delight. Attributed to Jaroslav Šmídek these re-upholstered hardwood chairs are typical examples of the “Brussels” style popular in the former Czechoslovakia during the mid to late 20th century. Influenced by the postwar fashions established at the international Expo 58, the dynamic forces of Modernism met the stark reality of post-war necessity, producing a simplification of form, boiled down to a pure expression of function and beauty.
