About the Item
English antique armchair made by the Guild of Handicraft of Charles Robert Ashbee, a designer and architect and central figure of the English Arts & Crafts Movement. Elegantly carved in solid ash woods with superb original color. Features a raked ladderback of three slats with roll over arms and an unusual richly patinated stitched leather seat rather than the more traditional rush bottom. Wear through to front rail but seat remains stable for continued gentle use. Circa 1890s.
