ABOUT THE STYLE: Art Deco, short for the French Arts décoratifs (lit. 'Decorative Arts'),[1] is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design, that first appeared in Paris in the 1910s (just before World War I),[2] and flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. Art Deco has its origins in bold geometric forms of the Vienna Secession and Cubism. From its outset, it was influenced by the bright colors of Fauvism and of the Ballets Russes, and the exoticized styles of art from China, Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt, and Maya. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. The movement featured rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship. It also introduced new materials such as chrome plating, stainless steel and plastic.

Cubist Art Deco Armchair in Vermilion Mohair Velvet and Maple, Belgium, 1920s
Located in The Hague, NL
This striking Art Deco armchair was manufactured in Belgium in the mid 1920s. The distinct tiered and angular shape of the design is a great example of the influence of cubism in this particular era. The originality of the design and the craftsmanship of the production make this a unique piece.
The chair has a rounded and curved backrest and a deep seat. The optional loose pillow adds additional seating comfort to the back. The elegant frame is executed in solid European maple wood which has been finished in a darker brown stain. The chair is upholstered in a sumptuous deep pile mohair velvet in a beautiful vermilion color.
The chair is in overall good condition. The wood with minor wear consistent with age and use. The upholstery recently renewed. The seat with a single minor stain.
Provenance: Yves de Smet, Gent, Belgium
