Early 20th Century French Armchair, France ca 1920s
About the Item
This armchair recalls a beautiful era in French design history. The early 20th century saw the rise of Art Nouveau in much of Europe, first and foremost, in France. French furniture makers embraced this style, and in the years between the World Wars, produced some of the most exciting and innovative Art Deco furniture the world had seen.
This beautiful historical armchair in the style of Paul Follot is exemplary of the French Art Deco: pieces were one of a kind; French furniture designers considered themselves the modern iteration of classic furniture makers. Furthermore, as this chair shows, their artistic approach was anchored by characteristic French refinement expressed by graceful forms and traditional methods like veneering and marquetry. This model’s contemporary touch is based on its unmistakable functionality. Then there is the application of artistic touches and ornament, some not traditionally French, that complement this pieces’ functionality. Such are the heavily splayed back legs that assure stability. Here, the desire for functionalism goes hand in hand with understatement, refinement, and elegance. The design is concerned with graceful proportions and restrained, harmonious ornament while reinstating the ideals of fine craftsmanship.
The ornamentation is mainly present on the divine original upholstery, with an unmistakable French pattern, and on the carved, front legs. More than any other country, France embodied this spirit, especially in its iconic French Art Deco furniture, including this armchair.
