About the Item

Armchair, oak, rope, the Netherlands, circa 1910 This early Dutch lounge chair is executed in oak and is designed by 't Binnenhuis and attributed to Jac van den Bosch. The chair is stately, solemn and designed by means of the principles of 't Binnenhuis, executed in oak and rope. 't Binnenhuis was one of the most important Dutch furniture movements of the 20th century. The initiative for the creation of 't Binnenhuis came from the architect H.P. Berlage, furniture designer Jac. van den Bosch and Gerling and Willem Hoeker, silversmith and owner of the Amstelhoek Pottery factory. They intent was to bring the interior of the craft industry to a higher level and make well-designed utensils for larger groups of people. Although it has not been possible to meet this last goal, the company has had a major share in the new direction that has taken shape at the beginning of the 20th century.
