El Lissitzky 'D62' armchair Tecta - Germany, 1978

About the Item

Originally designed for the Soviet Pavilion at the 1928 Pressa exhibition in Cologne, El Lizzitzky’s D62 was enormously prescient. Rooted in the Bauhaus and constructivist movements, this early club chair recalls the radical geometry of his typographic work. Soft leather upholstery is enclosed by a studded sheath that recalls the shell of a crustacean. Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer and architect Lizzitzky (1890-1941) was a great believer in the artist’s role as an agent for change. Perhaps best known for his pioneering graphic design work, he taught briefly at Marc Chagall’s People’s Art School and produced significant works of propaganda, including the Bolshevik lithograph ‘Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge’. In 1921 he became Russian cultural ambassador to Weimar Germany, influencing important figures of the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements.

David Horan Paper armchair for Béton Brut, UK, 2022
By David Horan
Located in London, GB
David Horan (born in Dublin, 1982) is a multidisciplinary designer and manufacturer based in London. With a Master of Arts in Design Products from the Royal College of Art 2013, he cut his cloth with London-designers Faye Toogood and Michael Anastassiades, before opening his own studio in 2021. This handmade armchair is part of the inaugural furniture and lighting collection by Horan entitled Paper. The collection ‘Paper’, designed exclusively with Béton Brut gallery, sees Horan as a modern decoupeur, applying his material to an original series of works. The magic of paper is grounded in forms as precise as they are architectonic. Evoking Deco and Classical, the geometries contain harmony in ratio. ‘Paper’ is as much an experiment in de-composition as re-composition, the Dragon Skin armchairs, left raw, are made from vintage handmade paper...
