About the Item

A fine pair of mahogany Empire gondola armchairs, very confortable gondola chair model. The armrest are swan-shaped and front legs are lion-legs-shaped. The seats are covered with a leopard-style patterned velvet. Early 19th century high-end production circa 1803 - 1805 by Jacob Frères, not stamped. This type of lion leg pattern was very fashionable during years 1800 ; Jacob Frères were particularly careful about their sculpture quality : here they sculpted bones and flesh very precisely, even the paw pads. Typical Jacob Freres' swan busts are also very well executed with very precise details and reliefs on the heads and wings. Our seats are not signed ; they originally came together with larget set in which a pair of chairs were signed. They have been fully restored according to the highest quality level, without compromising on any detail : structure is checked, mahogany refinished by our cabinet maker in the traditional way (French polish), reupholstered and covered with a leopard pelage patterned velvet (Osborne & Little) by our craftsman in a traditional way. The fabric pattern matches real, authentic Empire taste under Impress Josephine ; it is also a choice interior designer Madeleine Castaing had done for her Empire collections. This makes them match any type of decoration : neoclassical or modern style interiors. Width : 58cm Height : 83cm Depth : 50cm Seat height : 42cm

Pair of French Empire Mahogany Armchairs Attributed to Jean-Pierre Louis
By Jean Pierre Louis
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A classic pair of French Empire period open armchairs in well figured and carved mahogany; each with a square back topped by a bow shaped carved frieze featuring folliate rosettes and downscrolled arms. Where the arms join the chair rail there are carved anthemians and palmettes. These two chairs are presented in the original now faded and worn gros point green upholstery and have their original casters. These two armchairs are actually part of a set of six. The set was split up in three sets of two's to make them more saleable. Four of the six have been re-upholstered in sympathetic empire fabric...
