About the Item

Extremely rare Colonial Indonesian armchair. Palisander wood, Batavia, Indonesia, circa 1680-1720. Interesting Colonial Indonesian armchair, finely carved in half relief. Very good condition. Cane seat and cane frame both replaced. The rich flower and leaf ornamentation recalls the abundant vegetation in full growth on the Indonesian island of Java; It brings us back to the work at the times of Batavia, the capital city of Java, today Jakarta; The V.O.C known by its initials, Compagnie des Indes Orientales, based in Holland and Jakarta, encourages strongly the local production among all its possessions in Asia. Furniture including seats and sideboards are directly inspired from the Classic and traditional Dutch furniture pieces. Colonial staff newly arrived in Indonesia are asking for a better confort and they patronize local furniture makers in Batavia. Jogjakarta home of the Sultans residence in their princely Kratons, is home of new furniture carving studios and factories to serve the noble Indonesian demand along with the colons newly built homes in need of confort. At this time, furniture including armchairs are always with rich ornamentation, keeping a Classic heritage with the elegant twisted base recalling the "Golden Age" furniture of 17th century low countries. The low back, with the Fine twisted "colonnettes," gives a lighter look to the armchair. Floral ornamentation can also be seen on the colonial silverware, recalling the quality of more sober Dutch silver pieces. Similar Indonesian armchairs, made during the Dutch period (17th century) are illustrated in the book: "Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India during the Dutch period" From Jan Veenendaal, 1985.
