He enjoyed great success with the French bourgeoisie between the 1860s and the 1880s. Emperor Napoleon III wishing to surround himself with a sumptuous court, he tried to reconnect with the pomp of the First Empire and restore rise to French industry through its orders. While attaching himself to the conservation of old know-how, Napoleon III encouraged the development of new techniques. But the evolution of the decorative arts is due more to the action of Empress Eugénie than to that of the Emperor. The Empress is very attracted to the styles of the past, in particular the Louis XVI style. She gives an important place in her apartments to the furniture of Marie-Antoinette or to furniture inspired by her.
