German Armchair by Richard Riemerschmid for Soennecken, 1930

About the Item

This striking armchair, designed by Richard Riemerschmid in 1930, is a prime example of his work during his time with the German Werkbund. Produced by Soennecken in Bonn, with collaboration from the Estonian plywood manufacturer Luterma, the chair reflects Riemerschmid’s embrace of functional elegance and minimalism, qualities that aligned with the aesthetic shifts of the era, similar to the Bauhaus style. The chair’s solid oak frame and curved plywood backrest showcase a sophisticated simplicity, highlighted by a transparent dark brown lacquer that gives the piece a classic, refined finish. The clean lines and straightforward construction embody the rational, utilitarian spirit that was becoming popular in the 1930s, particularly in workspaces and study rooms. Documented in an architectural sketch at the Munich Architecture Museum and featured in a Soennecken sales brochure, this chair is a rare example of Riemerschmid's later designs. Its Soennecken brand stamp on the inside front rail further authenticates its provenance, making it an exceptional find for collectors and design enthusiasts alike. A true piece of design history, this armchair captures the essence of 1930s German modernism.
