An exceptional pair of early 20th-century high-back chairs, hand-carved from solid walnut in Indonesia circa 1930. These richly detailed pieces exemplify the masterful wood craftsmanship and bold design language of the period, combining traditional Indonesian artistry with strong, architectural lines.
Each chair features a high, elegantly curved back and sweeping armrests, all meticulously adorned with deep-relief carvings. Ornamental floral and foliate motifs span across the sides, back, and front apron, adding a dramatic and sculptural quality to the overall silhouette. The solid walnut frames offer warmth and natural texture, beautifully enhanced by the wood’s aged patina.
Upholstered in their original red fabric, the chairs strike a rich contrast between vivid textile and carved wood. The fabric shows some minor signs of wear consistent with use and age but remains both vibrant and serviceable.
