About the Item

This primitive-style armchair is steeped in Japanese tradition and aesthetics. It was created in the Meiji and Taisho periods (1860s-1920s) for its powerful yet delicate beauty. Boldly carved from a large zelkova tree, the chair exudes an unwavering presence that only natural wood can provide. The traces of handwork on the seat and backrest tell us that this chair is not just a piece of furniture, but a work of sculpture. From every angle, the powerful flow of the wood grain catches the eye and creates a quiet tension in the space. The furniture is in surprisingly good condition for being over 100 years old, with no insect damage or major damage. Its appearance is imbued with the spirit of Japanese “wabi-sabi,” and it evokes beauty in imperfection rather than perfection. It is recommended as an art piece and as a leg to enhance a calm space.
