Koene Oberman Armchair in Gray Two Tone Wool and Iron, Netherlands, 1950s

About the Item

This very rare armchair was designed by Koene Oberman and produced by Meubelindustrie Gelderland BV in Culemborg, Netherlands in the 1950s. Koene Oberman was not only the founder of the Dutch manufacturer Gelderland but also designed many of the company's early models. The lacquered iron base of this chair with its distinct grashopper inspired legs was also used by Oberman for an armless lounge chair version, as well as a version with wooden armrests. This particular chair is the first one we've come across with a fully upholstered shell, with generously sized armrests. The upholstered shell is placed at an angle on the base, creating a striking and dynamic silhouette. The playful, geometric lines of the design make this an excellent example of Dutch Mid-Century Modern design at its best. The chair is in overall very good condition. It has been upholstered in a two-tone gray wool fabric, with the loose back and seat cushion in a slightly darker tone of gray. The fabric is in good condition. The iron base with minor wear and patina consistent with age and use. Other designers working in a similar Mid-Century Modern style include Pierre Guariche, Joseph André Motte and Pierre Paulin.

Gustave Gautier Attributed Armchair in Oak and Jacquard Fabric, France, 1950s
By Gustave Gautier, Nobilis
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare armchair was produced in France in the late 1950s. The design of this particular model is attributed to the designer Gustave Gautier. The chair is characterized by the sharp angles, geometric lines and scissor construction of the solid oak wood frame. The pointed back legs form a diagonal line and are widening towards the front of the seat. The front legs form a second diagonal line and a scissor shape in combination with the back legs. They're attached to the backrest and to the arms, which are executed in a narrowing, pointed line again. The armrests attached on top of the arms end in a rounded, more organic shape. The chair has been newly upholstered in a sumptuous ivory/ light cream jacquard Nobilis Paris fabric. By combining very irregular woolly yarns and thrown threads, the fabric has a refined texture and appearance. The oak wood is in very good original condition with a natural, attractive patina. Other designers working in the same French Modern style include Guillerme & Chambron...
