Kurt Olsen Model 221 Armchair in Élitis Tweed Fabric, Slagelse Møbelfabrik, 1955
About the Item
This rare and iconic armchair was designed by Kurt Olsen in 1955 and produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik in Denmark as model no. 221. A standout piece of mid-century Danish design, it showcases Olsen’s signature sculptural lines and refined craftsmanship.
Generously proportioned, the chair features a distinctive wing-shaped backrest that offers both exceptional comfort and an enveloping, supportive feel. The sharply angled back legs create a dynamic silhouette, drawing the eye forward to the elegantly curved solid oak armrests. The legs are crafted in solid teak.
This chair has been professionally refinished and reupholstered. The interior upholstery has been renewed, while the exterior is in a luxurious grey tweed fabric by Élitis. The textile boasts a nuanced, multi-tonal palette—subtle flecks of ivory, grey, brown, and pale blue lend depth.
Often affectionately referred to as Kurt Olsen’s “Papa Bear”—a nod to Hans Wegner’s iconic design—this armchair represents the pinnacle of Olsen's oeuvre.

Ignazio Gardella 'Digamma' Armchair in Emerald Green Lelièvre Fabric and Brass
By Ignazio Gardella, Santa & Cole, Lelièvre Paris
Located in The Hague, NL
Designed by Ignazio Gardella in 1957, the Digamma lounge chair is a comfortable chair with roots in the late Italian modernist tradition.
Its rational construction features two geometric sections - the rectangular upholstered back and seat - bound by a firm upholstered frame. The black metallic legs are finished off with Gardella's iconic brass 'duck' feet. The armchair has a three-position reclining backrest offering additional comfort and adjustability.
This chair is a custom version realized by Santa & Cole for Kabinet Hubert, upholstered and sewn by hand in an emerald green Lelièvre fabric. This soft and dense fabric is a delicate combination of chenille and bouclé yarns.
Ignazio Gardella was a member of the so-called third generation of the Modern Movement. He is considered one of the greatest exponents of Italian Rationalism, although he followed its principles in a much more personal way, searching to overcome its limitations. In 1957, he created the Digamma armchair...
