About the Item

A fabulous Louis XV style child's fauteuil (armchair) with the original painted finish from France c.1865. This chair has the beautiful flowing lines of the style immortalized under the reign of Louis XV (1723-1774) that are reminiscent of the natural and organic lines seen in nature. The back of the chair has an elegant shape to it with the rounded top embellished with a bouquet of flowers set directly in the centre. The sides of the back follow a curved line down to the arms where they branch forward and also continue to the lower section of the back where they flow together again to complete an entire outline comprised of carved and painted wood. Each of the arms are set to the side of the seat and have a carved wood back and front where they join a vertical piece of wood to reach the seat. Because the arms are attached at both the back and the seat they are extremely sturdy and provide excellent support. The carving on the arms matches the curved line seen on the back and the curved edge that encloses the seat and this continuous movement along an undulating line over the entire frame of the chair is what gives it its perfection of form. The front rail of the seat frame of the chair is also adorned with a carved bouquet of flowers that spread their blossoms and foliage across the horizontal expanse of the rail. All four of the legs have the characteristic cabriole leg seen on all true Louis XV style furniture and they are joined to the seat rail in a way that makes the line an unending curve. Both of the front legs also have a beautiful floral carving the area of the chair leg known as the "knee" that thrusts the farthest forward. The entire chair still retains the original painted finish that shows the passage of time and the service this chair provided to the children of an affluent French family. The beauty of this finish is impossible to replicate in a new chair because of the wonderfully random nature of the wear. The fauteuil has been freshly upholstered in a sumptuous cotton velvet in a luscious amethyst colour that enables the beautiful painted finish to be seen to full advantage.
