About the Item

José Zanine Caldas (1919–2001) was a Brazilian architect, designer, and craftsman celebrated for his innovative use of native materials and his commitment to sustainable design. Often referred to as the "master of wood," he skillfully combined traditional Brazilian techniques with modernist principles to create furniture and architectural works that embodied the essence of Brazilian culture. Created for living spaces and mainly dining rooms, this model was largely produced between 1948 and 1949. With a solid Pau Marfim frame and apparent bolts, the chair comes in variants with and without armrests. The upholstery in both the curved backrest and the seat contributes to the comfort and aesthetics of the time when fabric was used in most productions. Literature: L.A. Magnani, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (ed.), Ver Zanine, Rio de Janeiro 2003, p. 48.
