Mid-Century 1960 Vintage Brazilian Design Armchairs

About the Item

This armchair is a striking example of Brazilian modernist design from the 1960s, blending organic materials with clean, functional lines. The seat and backrest are composed of woven natural wicker, shaped into a rounded, enveloping form that offers both visual warmth and ergonomic support. The curvature of the back transitions seamlessly into the arms, creating a unified, cocoon-like structure that embraces the sitter. A neutral-toned cushion adds comfort while maintaining the chair’s earthy aesthetic. Supporting this light yet tactile body is a geometric black metal base, composed of slender, hairpin-style legs that cross at the base for added stability and sculptural interest. The contrast between the handcrafted wicker and the industrial steel frame embodies the era’s fascination with juxtaposing traditional craftsmanship and modernist innovation, a hallmark of mid-century Brazilian furniture design.
