Armchair by G Plan Love the shape and textures of this fabulous, super comfy chair! G Plan The company was founded in High Wycombe in 1898 by Ebeneezer Gomme,at first making hand-made chairs, and building a factory at Leigh Street in 1909. By 1922 there were 300 employees, and a second factory was opened in 1927 at Spring Gardens, next to the railway line. From 1943, during World War II, furniture sales were controlled by rationing; the Board of Trade set up the Utility scheme which limited the types of furniture on sale and their cost, and a small number of simple designs were available in oak or mahogany. The ending of this scheme in December 1952, combined with the 1951 Festival of Britain, led to a pent-up demand for more modern furniture. G Plan teak and afrormosia sideboard, with doors open In 1953, Donald Gomme, the designer at E Gomme, decided to produce a range of modern furniture for the entire house which could be bought piece-by-piece according to budgets. Advertising was part of the plan from the beginning. The name was coined by Doris Gundry of the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, and the furniture was advertised in magazines and in cinemas direct to the public. Designs were available for several years so people could collect them slowly. All furniture was marked with a distinctive brand mark. This chair by The Rare Chair Company is the saddleback design and is dated circa mid 1960's. Teak frame is supported on the original castors with the side panels also finished in a fabulous teak. We have cleaned, polished and applied beeswax polish to all the woodwork. The seat support is the original rubber spring mounted design in excellent condition. Finally, we have replaced all the internal padding and hand picked a stunning and vibrant olive green velvet fabric to set the chair off. Matching sofa also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible set was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept them in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. Both chairs hover on their original Magnum Orbit chrome...
