About the Item

The ‘Samurai’ lounge chair was designed by Italian Luciano Frigerio in the 1960s. The combination of the cherrywood frame, soft black leather, tan leather belts and unusual square buttons, make for an extremely unusual and stylish piece. The chair also has a very interesting method of attaching the cushions to one another, laced together using a hook and eye method. The thick soft leather is beautifully stitched and has a lovely patina, the only damage is a bit of leather loss to the piping on the corner of the base cushion and one button - please see images. The chair is in strong and sturdy condition, and Its thick seat and arms make it an extremely comfortable chair. The rich varnished cherrywood has a couple of age-related marks. The only restored area of the chair is the beautiful tan leather belts. Frigerio studied architecture at Milan Polytechnic, graduating in 1964. After working for several furniture manufacturers in Italy, he founded his own design studio in 1968. In the 1970s and 1980s, Frigerio worked with Poltrona Frau, creating iconic pieces such as the ‘Vanity Fair’ sofa in 1980. Frigerio also collaborated with Cassina in the 1980s, creating modern, functional designs such as the ‘Artisan’ table and the ‘Hélène’ chair. His work is often characterized by a combination of simple, elegant forms with high-quality materials, such as leather and wood. Today, Luciano Frigerio's creations are considered collector's items and are exhibited in museums around the world, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
