Pair of Antique French Elmwood Louis Philippe Armchairs, Circa 1840

About the Item

Known as pied en cuisse de grenouille, or “frog leg foot”, this pair of elmwood armchairs has interesting front legs formed by counter curves. Hand-carved in France, circa 1840, the armchairs are Louis Philippe, the period in which these motifs were first used. The en sabre back legs, which are also a hallmark of Louis Philippe, are blocks that softly curve outward. Louis Philippe seating, while solidly constructed, placed a premium on comfort. Both chairs have a rectangular back with a gently rolling top rail, matching the slight slope of the arms that terminate in large volute arm stumps. The rich wood (a warm honey color) pairs well with the light brown upholstery on the backs and the seats, which are plump. A repeating pattern of white attenuated shells and roundels arranged in a lozenge pattern add additional color to the upholstery. Our pair of elmwood Louis Philippe armchairs can be used with any style of design. Place them as side chairs in an entry hall or foyer, or as fireside chairs in a living room or library.
