Pair of armchairs. Wood, textile. 18th century.

About the Item

Pair of armchairs. Wood, textile. 18th century. Pair of high-backed armchairs with arms of the "queen's fateuil" type, with a carved wooden frame in its own color. It features curved legs on dowels and carved "H"-shaped frames on the fronts with waves (like the legs and arms) and vegetal and geometric elements, as well as scrolls. The seat is upholstered in tapestry (vegetal theme) with a border featuring simplified architectural elements, a combination also found on the high backrest, where figurative elements can be seen (which could be female allegories against backgrounds with vegetal and architectural motifs). These sinuous lines of arms, legs and jambs are known in the French school as "en os de mouton" (muton-shaped frames), and are characteristic of the Louis XIII style but also frequently used in the furniture of the French school of Louis XIV style. Throughout the latter period (which took place during the reign of the monarch of that name, between 1661 and 1715, although it was only strongly prevalent until around the death of Le Brun in 1690, after which it was progressively replaced by the Regency), the jambs of chairs and armchairs went from being H-shaped to being X-shaped, as a general rule. The upholstery is also antique. · Size: 67x72x111 cms.
