About the Item

These boldly angular lounge chairs feature a "Brutalist" design that was popular in Europe during the 1960's and 1970's. During the post-war period, Hungarian furniture production was redirected toward simple furniture for the masses and away from luxury production. However, Communist party officials encouraged limited production of special pieces for themselves and to compete with the cultural fashions of the West. Art and culture - including furniture- were seen as helping to legitimize the socialist system. Brutalism was immediately adopted as the dominant variant of the "Mid-Century Socialist" style. It is boldness, originality, and lack of connection to previous styles that were seen as virtuous, as was its anarchic use of materials and motifs. The chairs feature domestic Hungarian walnut veneers and have been meticulously restored, restuffed, and reupholstered.
