About the Item

A rare and striking pair of highly modernist wing chairs, attributed to Melchiorre Bega and produced in Italy in the 1940s. These chairs showcase a bold, organic design that was truly avant-garde for its time, masterfully balancing sculptural aesthetics with exceptional comfort. The structure is crafted from solid ash wood (frassino massello), left in its original patina to preserve its natural character and warmth. A signature element of Bega’s style, the high winged backrest features elegantly curved “ears” that invite you to lean back and relax. The seating experience is as enveloping as it is visually striking—you will find yourself sinking in and indulging in its embrace, guaranteed. A key distinguishing feature of this design is the dramatic contrast between the front and rear legs. The front legs are bold and stout conical forms with an impressive 10 cm (3.9 inches) diameter, giving the chairs a strong, grounded presence. In contrast, the rear legs are slender, elongated, and curve gracefully backward like a comma—an exceptionally forward-thinking detail for the era and a hallmark of Bega’s design language. Newly reupholstered in a sumptuously soft beige poodle bouclé fabric with a luxurious “barboncino” texture, the material enhances the sculptural silhouette while providing a beautiful contrast to the warm ash frame. This pair embodies the organic modernist aesthetic seen in the works of Paolo Buffa, Gio Ponti, Flemming Lassen, Philip Arctander, and Jean Royère. Condition: Upholstery fully restored; wood left in its original patina, with visible signs of age on the legs. Photos of the chairs in their original state are available upon request. For further details or additional images, please feel free to inquire.
