Pair of Louis XV chairs or armchairs. Carved wood, upholstery. Possibly France, 18th century. Pair of upholstered high-back armchairs, cushion and arms with a fragment in the center also upholstered, of the type known as “fauteuil à la reine” due to its shape, made of carved and gilded wood. The legs have a soft cabriole shape and a stud as a bottom finish, as well as a carved decoration based on flowers, seed beads and plant elements, which can be found throughout the furniture. The backrest, high and flat, ends in a smooth pronounced curve towards the center, and from it the arms emerge, in a straight line forward, until a little more in front of the middle of the seat, at which point they descend towards the same drawing a gentle curve. It is known as Louis XV, in cabinetmaking, the style developed in France between the years 1732 and 1765, approximately, during the reign of the monarch of the same name. It is an artistic trend that is part of the Rococo, hence the abundance of curved lines, plant elements and the presence of rockeries and motifs inspired by scallops. Likewise, it is necessary to indicate that, although towards the beginning of the Rococo asymmetry in decoration was common, after a while more symmetrical schemes were generally imposed on furniture, decorative panels, etc. The “queen armchair” typology was created, according to some experts, by the cabinetmaker Jean-Baptiste Tillard, and is one of the most characteristic types of Louis XV furniture, although there are also Louis XVI style (and period) types. In any case, this category already appears in the books of engravings L\\'Art du menusier by André Jacob Roubo, published between 1769 and 1775. During the early years of the Regency (1715-23) the armchairs had short, curved legs , the upper part of the backrest was slightly curved, while the supports of the backrest and arms were straight. The armchairs of the middle Louis XV period (1723-1750) were smaller than those of the Louis XIV period, but more comfortable. The legs were more curved, the upper part of the back was rounded, and often had a small ornamental design. The back of the chair took on a more graceful violin shape. This form became known as the Chaise à la Reine, or "Queen's Chair". Compare this example with outstanding pieces, such as those kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris: a group of four “queen chairs” dated between 1745 and 1750 (one has inventory number OA 10498 4), another pair from around 1740 (OA 10501 1 and OA 10501 2), one from René Cresson's workshop dated between 1730 and 1740, etc. Or the chair in which the Marquise de Pompadour appears seated in the portrait, kept in this same institution, painted by Maurice-Quentin de La Tour between 1752 and 1755. · Size: 72x65x108 cms WEight may vary. Naveta with oval foot decorated with relief elements and moldings, balustrade foot and body with light boat shape, presenting a hinged lid in the front, a widening in the lower area towards the foot and a decoration distributed throughout the exterior base of rockery motifs and plant elements (the same theme is presented on the foot and base) on a background of chopped luster, with an angel's head on two wings in relief towards the peak, accompanied by plant elements (the which protrude from the edge of the lid). Although the shape of the piece follows in general lines the most usual prototypes in these incense containers used in the liturgy, it is necessary to indicate that it was more frequent to find them more similar to a ship. The naveta's belonging to the influence of Rococo is clear both for the lines of the object and for the decoration to which reference has already been made (pebbles, plant elements with movement, volutes with pronounced curves, contrasts between concave and convex lines ... ), as well as it is possible to find some points in common with Portuguese works (presents an auction with an angel head in relief a silver naveta with a spoon by Leandro Gagliardi made in Rome between 1744 and 1750 that is preserved in the Museum of Sao Roque of Lisbon in Portugal, compare with the silver plated censer that the same master made between 1749 and 1751 for the Chapel of San Juan Bautista of the Church of San Roque in Lisbon). The contrast marks present in the upper part of the naveta (the "capitalized" letters in a rectangular space), although it should also be noted that this work does not follow the most striking typology of navetas related to this center (naveta de 18th century silver from the Church of Alcántara de Maranhao, Brazil; naveta by Sebastiao Bernardes dos Santos, dated 1747 from Sé do Funchal, which is kept in the Museu de Arte Sacra Do Funchal in Madeira Portugal...
