Pair of New Objectivity Armchairs by Bruno Paul

About the Item

A rare pair of New Objectivity armchairs by Bruno Paul, Germany, circa 1936. These pieces feature sculptural walnut armrests with distinctive scrolled terminals, emblematic of Paul's elegant and restrained design vocabulary. The backs of the chairs are fully upholstered on all sides-with no visible frame, they emphasize volume, proportion, and clarity of form. The silhouette is compact yet authoritative, reflecting the transitional spirit between Late Expressionism and New Objectivity. Quietly expressive and immaculately constructed, these chairs are emblematic of Paul's mastery at the intersection of craftsmanship and modern design. Bruno Paul was one of the most influential architects and designers of early 20th century Germany. A teacher of Mies van der Rohe and the first director of the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst (the forerunner of today's University of the Arts), he was a central figure in the development of design in the Weimar Republic. His furniture, often produced in small series or as one-off commissions, reflects his architectural discipline, his deep respect for materials, and a modern humanism that tempers rigorous rationality with comfort and serenity.
