About the Item
A pair of midcentury lounge chairs with organically curved armrests designed by Roland Rainer for the Cafe Ritter in Vienna, Austria, in 1952 and manufactured by Emil & Alfred Pollak.
The chairs are in very good condition. Most likely they were reupholstered with high quality velvet in the past or hardly used.
The wooden frame is made of a stained beech in a warm walnut finish.
Roland Rainer (1910-2004) was an Austrian architect and professor. He was teaching at several European Universities and he was one of the most important architects in Austria. The 'Wiener Stadthalle' (Vienna city hall) was one of his most significant works and was built from 1956-1962. The chairs for the city hall are very well-known and sought-after design objects.
The offered pair of lounge chairs were designed for the Viennese coffee house 'Cafe Ritter'. These chairs also were used by Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl for the 'Cafe Prückel' in Vienna.

About Anna-Lülja Praun:
Anna-Lülja Praun was born in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, in 6/29/1906 and lived in Vienna until 9/28/2004. She was an important Austrian designer and architect and she was one of the first females who studied architecture in Austria.
In 1947 she worked on the restoration of the palace Belvedere which was heavily damaged in the second world war. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Vienna. She designed houses, interiors, furniture, shops, light fixtures, and pottery (together with Gudrun Baudisch).
From 1953-1959 she also worked for the furniture shop „Haus und Garten“ which was established by Josef Frank in 1925.
In 1959 she designed a bench „Bank zum Ausruhen“ for the conductor Herbert von Karajan.
