About the Item
A handsome and most decorative pair of Roman 18th century Louis XVI Period Giltwood armchairs. This wonderful pair of chairs is raised by four Giltwood toupie shaped feet with a foliate collar leading up to tapered fluted legs capped with square blocks adorned with rosettes. Each chair's seating frame is centered in the front by a rectangular panel featuring a hand carved oak leaf garland below the generously upholstered seat cushion. The octagonal upholstered backrest is framed in Giltwood and supports two charmingly scrolled arms held by tapered and fluted supports with foliate collars. The backrest of each seat is decorated at the top by a round medallion displaying the profile of a Roman emperor on a faux painted imperial Porphyry background.
