About the Item

This exceptionally rare armchair was designed by Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs in the 1940s and produced by his company, Hiort Tuote Puunveisto, in Finland. It is one of Hiort af Ornäs' earlier designs and was part of a small production run at his workshop. The chair is stamped with the manufacturer's mark on the underside of the frame. The design is characterized by its high, rounded back and elegantly curved lines, making it a very comfortable and embracing armchair to sit in. It is currently upholstered in a teal velvet fabric. The robust, wedge-shaped legs, made of solid lacquered beech wood, create a sculptural base for the chair. The chair is in overall good condition. The velvet upholstery has minor imperfections, including scratches and a small hole, so reupholstery is recommended. The legs show minor wear consistent with age and use. Biography: Carl Gustav Hiort af Ornäs (1911-1996) was a Finnish-Swedish interior designer with his own furniture manufacturing shop on Lauttasaari in Helsinki from 1945. His designs were sold by Nupponen in Finland and Gösta Westerberg Möbel AB in Sweden. His work is characterized by an emphasis on clean lines, organic shapes, and the use of natural materials, particularly wood, which was central to his design philosophy.

Carl Malmsten "Stora Furulid" Armchair for OPE-Möbler Jönköping, Sweden 1950s
By Carl Malmsten
Located in Utrecht, NL
There is a certain “Malmstenesque” charm to the Swedish designer’s pieces that manifests in the gentle but defined curves, cosy appearance and in the modern way Carl Malmsten skilfully carried the heritage of traditional allmoge (folk art) design. The expression “Swedish Modern” was first used at the 1939 New York World Fair, when the designer introduced the model “Oskar”. Similarly to that model, Malmsten remained a traditionalist, mainly concerned with comfort regarding the “Stora Furulid...
