About the Item

A fine and very rare early 18th century English oak dugout armchair, the generously sized body rough-hewn from a single oak tree trunk, showing adzed and drawn toolmarks and possessing a wonderful organic form. Chairs like these were often formed from dead and decaying trees, with the partly rotted inner core more easily scooped out to form the hollow of the chair. This example is especially graphic and sculptural and is of a scale seldom seen. For a similar example, see Victor Chinnery's "Oak Furniture, the British Tradition, fig 2:42".
