About the Item

The Regency style started in 1720, until Louis XV was of age to rule without his Regent. It was when he was considered adult at 15. It’s a very nice period style-wise transitioning from Louis 14 to Louis 15. This Marquise armchair is a very wide Fauteuil, it was designed for the ladies fashion with the very large dresses with Panier's (hip basket-like undergarments of whalebone) which made it difficult to even pass through a door, so they went sideways. These chairs are now large (wide) enough for two good friends. The measurement between arms on these is 37" compared with an average armchair of the period being 20" between the arms. The sculpting on the this is beautifully detailed, with gorgeous acanthus leaf sculpted boldly. We had sabots-slippers made for the feet in gilt bronze. Due to the heavy use of all armchairs in the 18th century, they were created with two complete sets of seat bottoms, seat backs and armchair cushions. One for winter, one for summer, so they could be deep cleaned, in tones reflecting the season. Here, on those listed above for example, the Winter upholstery fabric is rich red damask with (actual) 18th century designed, newly issued Lisio fabric. The summer fabric being a lustrous yellow gold with salmon colored accents. Each marquise / settee comes with its custom lined heavy toile cover (see image 17). The Marquise (1720s) was one of the many French ideas of the 18th century which are remarkable and remain so desirable as well as the Pompadour secretary-desk (1749) and Sevres Porcelain (1738). The Marquises are, whether from the Regency or later Louis XV time, virtually impossible to find. They were lost in the revolution and also by their nature, with heavy use and often a pair of intimate friends sharing them, also perished from heavy use. We had found, in the Musee des arts Decorative area in the Louvre Museum an armchair ( Shown on the cover of their book, see image 20 ) that was used as the inspiration to recreate in these marquises. Only the proportions, usability and the special gilt bronze feet were changed. We went for authenticity, even upholstering the back of the Marquise in the traditional checked patterned fabric used in the period because Marquise chairs are meant to be placed with their back to the wall of the rooms. This is a rule which I break, as I have a pair of different ones face to face in the center of the sitting or living room. We had the listed Marquises gold leafed with the water method, and put it in our Paris showroom. These were made for us by the Ebenistes of the Maison Straure, Paris (12th). They specialize in newly made furniture using the traditional old techniques, and in the style of the century. This or these chairs have perhaps never or rarely sat on. To avoid confusion, there are 2 of these sold separately, with 2 sets of fabrics or cushions sold with each . The fabric used here is Italian, from LISIO, Style Luigi XIV. 76% VI 12% CO 12% ME.
