About the Item

A pair of midcentury lounge chairs designed by Roland Rainer for the Cafe Ritter in Vienna, Austria, in 1950s and manufactured by Emil & Alfred Pollak. The chairs are in excellent condition. They have been refurbished and completely new upholstered with a high quality beige tone velour similar to velvet. The wooden frame is made of a stained beech in a warm walnut finish. Roland Rainer (1910-2004) was an Austrian architect and professor. He was teaching at several European Universities and he was one of the most important architects in Austria. The "Wiener Stadthalle" (Vienna city hall) was one of his most significant works and was built from 1956 to 1962. The chairs for the city hall are very well-known and sought-after design objects. The offered pair of lounge chairs were designed for the Viennese coffee house "Cafe Ritter". These chairs also were used by Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl for the "Cafe Prückel" in Vienna.
