About the Item

A midcentury lounge chair designed by Roland Rainer for the "Cafe Ritter" in Vienna, Austria, in 1952 and manufactured by Emil & Alfred Pollak. The chair is in excellent restored condition. It has been reupholstered with a high quality fabric in a dark and light grey tone. The wooden frame is made of a beech in a warm tone. There are also other Roland Rainer chairs in our stock (please see the last images for examples). Roland Rainer (1910-2004) was an Austrian architect and professor. He was teaching at several European Universities and he was one of the most important architects in Austria. In June 1952, the Viennese municipal council decided to build a large, multifunctional event hall 'Wiener Stadthalle' (Vienna city hall) and in October an architectural competition was announced. It was attended by 16 international planners and planning communities. Roland Rainer won the competition before Alvar Aalto (Finland). The 'Wiener Stadthalle' was one of his most significant works and was built from 1956-1962. The chairs for the city hall are very well-known and sought-after design objects. The offered pair of lounge chairs were designed for the Viennese coffee house 'Cafe Ritter'. These chairs also were used by Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl for the 'Cafe Prückel' in Vienna.

By Josef Frank, Anna-Lülja Praun

It is made of a warm toned solid wood frame with two loose leather cushions for the seat and the back. The cognac colored leather has a beautiful patina. The chair is in great condition with little wear on the cushions. About Anna-Lülja Praun: Anna-Lülja Praun was born in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, in 6/29/1906 and lived in Vienna until 9/28/2004. She was an important Austrian designer and architect and she was one of the first females who studied architecture in Austria. In 1947 she worked on the restoration of the palace Belvedere which was heavily damaged in the second world war. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Vienna. She designed houses, interiors, furniture, shops, light fixtures, and pottery (together with Gudrun Baudisch). From 1953-1959 she also worked for the furniture shop „Haus und Garten“ which was established by Josef Frank in 1925. In 1959 she designed a bench „Bank zum Ausruhen“ for the conductor Herbert von Karajan.
